LIGHT BLUE VELVET BACK AND PIPING

Chinese Girl, part of the Classic Collection cushion cover series, is perhaps Tretchikoff’s most celebrated and widely recognised work. This iconic portrait exemplifies his talent for capturing cultural identity while infusing it with a surreal, modern twist. The young Chinese woman is portrayed with an enigmatic beauty, her blue-green skin tone lending her an otherworldly aura that both unsettles and fascinates, earning her the enduring nickname ‘The Green Lady.’

Tretchikoff’s skillful interplay of colour, texture, and form elevates the sitter into a figure of mystique, her reserved expression and averted gaze drawing the viewer into a quiet dialogue of curiosity and contemplation. Much like Zulu Girl, this portrait champions the distinctiveness of global aesthetics, presenting beauty that is both culturally specific and universally compelling.

Chinese Girl remains one of the most reproduced and best-loved prints of the 20th century, testament to its powerful allure and timeless presence. With its combination of oriental elegance and surreal coloration, the artwork stands as a lasting symbol of Tretchikoff’s unique approach to portraiture. The cushion cover version offers the option to embellish with exquisite beading, heightening its tactile richness and transforming this already iconic image into a striking piece of functional art.
